Muzz
Muzz is the worlds biggest community for single Muslims to find their future partner. With a new user interface design for the search filter, Muzz aims to enhance users' comprehension of the search functionality. The problem is Muzz has heard from users over the years that the current search filter experience is frustrating owing to the lack of understanding between different premium features. Users are confused about the different functionality between hard and soft filters, which makes it difficult for them to find compatible matches.

The Goal:
The primary objective is to improve user understanding of the search functionality, particularly the distinction between standard and premium features. By enhancing clarity around how filters, preferences, and deal-breakers operate—especially those tied to premium access—we aim to empower users to make more informed decisions and optimize their search experience. This initiative supports increased engagement, better feature adoption, and an overall improvement in user satisfaction.

User Problem
Muzz has heard from users over the years that the current search filter experience is frustrating owing to the lack of understanding between different premium features. Users are confused about the different functionality between hard and soft filters, which makes it difficult for them to find compatible matches.
Business Problem
Poor understanding of the search filters premium features leads to user frustration, causing a decrease in customer satisfaction and resulting in lower conversion rates.
Competitive Analysis
In evaluating the search filter functionalities of direct competitors, I identified two primary categories. The first consists of platforms that utilize only hard filters, while the second employs a hybrid approach—defaulting to soft filters (preferences) with the option to mark specific criteria as deal-breakers. The latter model allows for more flexible search results, minimizing the risk of overly restrictive filtering. Notably, hard filters are often labelled as "advanced filters" or "deal-breakers," whereas soft filters are typically referred to as "preferences."
Learning From Competitor Research
Through the competitor analysis, I have analysed our search filter features against our competitors. Below are my findings on areas where Muzz excel and where Muzz can improve in comparison to our competitors.
What we do well:
Have both filters and search priorities to optimise user's potential match
We order the sections based on its sequence
What we can improve:
User the same term while describing the same thing
Use a familiar term current to mainstream apps or websites (Sort by)
Explain clearly how filter and search priorities work together
Have a step-by-step approach
User Research
To understand user confusion regarding premium features within the search filter, I conducted interviews with three participants. These sessions provided valuable insights and highlighted several user pain points, which are:
Feature names and explanation are not clear
Too many options for order profiles
Filter pool and reminder
Assumption between bonus filter and order profiles might be wrong
Number of bonus filters
Information overload between sections
Percentage pill confusion and insufficiency
User Research Analysis
Our previous design left users struggling to understand our premium features. The feature names were inconsistent, and the explanations were ambiguous. Furthermore, the filter classifications were confusing.
With our new design, we have created clear categories for hard and soft filters, enabling user to comprehend the different natures of each. We have also adopted commonly used terminology, icons and straightforward feature introductions to help users understand our premium features in the search filter.

The Result
The implementation of the new screens in the app resulted in a 60% increase in the usage of premium search filter features within a three-month period, as of November 2023. This significant growth suggests that the updated interface has successfully improved the visibility, accessibility, and perceived value of premium functionalities, ultimately encouraging more users to engage with advanced filtering options as part of their search experience.
